Postgraduate Courses for Professionals with Relevance to Developing Countries

  • Postgraduate courses for young professionals from developing countries at German institutions of Higher education
  • Duration: 12-24 months, depending on the particular institution
  • Internationally recognised Master degree
  • Includes German Universities and “Fachhochschulen” (Universities of Applied Science)
  • Support of selected programmes with a variety of full or partial scholarships
  • Funded by the BMZ (Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development) or self financed or financed through government or other sources
  • Academic year 2013/2014

Dates and Deadlines

The general closing dates for applications are as follows:

  • German Embassy/DAAD Regional Office: 31st July
  • DAAD in Bonn: 31st August
  • University: 30th September or 15th October


Applicants should be sure to check information regarding application closing dates directly with the individual universities  because they may vary from the general deadlines listed above.



The selection process generally takes place at the universities in the period from November to February.

Scholarships are usually awarded for the following winter semester.

Scholarship DescriptionUNIDO PhD fellows are required to submit research proposals and conduct PhD research in areas that reflect contemporary industrial development issues. These relate to challenges and opportunities such as: The impact of industrialization on productivity, employment and equitable inclusive growth; Ongoing industrial process, including the decoupling of industrial value chain tasks; (iii) Processes of inter- and intra-sectoral structural change and their determinants; (iv) Processes associated with industrial technological change (e.g., innovation, transfer and diffusion); (v) The emergence of new players in industrial production and trade; (vi) Matters related to industrial policy issues, dynamics and determinants of sustainable industrial development in developing countries and countries with economies in transition, including environmental concerns in industrial develop­ment strategies, and energy efficiency and green industry related issues.

Only citizens from non-European Union nations may apply. Candidates must have been born after 31 October 1982. Additional requirements are:
1. completion of an MA or equivalent degree prior to application deadline
2. not to have completed a research doctorate or equivalent
3. to have never or no more than once before applied for a PhD at the SNS
4. not to have been object of any of the sanctions or legal actions indicated at point a.1 in Attachment A . Candidates must also know at least one of the following languages: English, French, German, Italian, Spanish, and must possess adequate knowledge of Italian to consent academic work and research.
